Born in Faro, Portugal, in 1975, Rui began his music studies at the Regional Conservatory of the Algarve, the Maria Campina Conservatory in Faro, having completed his general studies in Music at the National Conservatory of Lisbon, Portugal.
He graduated in Vocal Arts at the Lisbon Music College, and has taken various post-graduate courses to perfect his artistic technique, such as the 19th and 20th Century Chamber Music Course at the Hindemith Foundation, in Blonay, Switzerland; the Vocal Arts and Singing Techniques Course with Prof. Richard Miller at the Mozarteum Internationale Sommerakademie, in Salzburg, Austria; and the Mélodie Française Performance Course with baritone François Le-Roux, at the Academie Francis Poulenc, in Tours, France.
Rui was a member of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Choir between 1994 and 2004.
His career as a concert soloist has included a host of concerts in various countries, such as the U.S.A., France, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Malta, and Cape Verde, on a par with intense artistic activity in Portugal. He has performed in recitals with pianists João Vasco de Almeida, João Paulo Santos, João Vale, Jeff Cohen, and Paulo Pacheco – having been jointly awarded the 1999 Portuguese Broadcasting Corporation Chamber Music Grand Prize for Young Musicians together with the latter.
As concerns operatic and oratorical arts, the following performances deserve highlight: in Carmina Burana with the Soloists Choir and Orchestra of Lisbon, conducted by Maestro Giovanni Andreoli; as Mr. Sharpless, in Madama Butterfly, conducted by Maestro Osvaldo Ferreira in a stage production by Carlos Avilez; as Father, in A Casinha de Chocolate, the Portuguese version of Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel with the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro Cesário Costa, in a stage production by Paulo Matos; as Hortensius, in Gaetano Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment, with the Soloists Orchestra of Lisbon conducted by Maestro Elio Orciuolo, in a stage production by Tito Celestino da Costa; as Mr. Plunkett, in Hans-Werner Henze’s The English Cat, conducted by Maestro João Paulo Santos, in a stage production by Luís Miguel Cintra performed at the São Carlos National Theatre and the Rivoli Theatre of Portugal; as the Son in D. Shostakovich’s O Nariz, conducted by Maestros Donato Renzetti and João Paulo Santos, in a stage production by João Lourenço performed at the São Carlos National Theatre; as Bartley in Vaughan Williams’s Riders To The Sea, conducted by Maestro João Paulo Santos, in a stage production by André Teodósio performed at the Modern Arts Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; as Hankidou in Bernard Cavanna’s Raphaël, Reviens, conducted by Maestro Cesário Costa and performed at the Modern Arts Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; in O Duplo, with art direction by Luís Madureira and music by João Madureira and Franz Schubert, performed at the Temps D’Images Festival; as Adonis in John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, conducted by Richard Gwilt and Jill Feldman; as Mathurin in Glück’s l'Ivrogne Corrigé and as Sylvester in Ned Rorem’s The Three Sisters That Are Not Sisters, conducted by Maestro Jeff Cohen and performed at the Porto Opera Study; as Golo in Satie’s Geneviéve de Brabant and as D. Quichotte in M. de Falla’s El Retablo de Maese Pedro, directed by Volte-Face Produções; as Sábio Máximo in Eurico Carrapatoso’s A Floresta, with the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra conducted by Maestro João Paulo Santos and the Aveiro Orchestra conducted by Maestro António Lourenço, in a stage production by Nuno Carinhas; as Butler in Nino Rota’s Lo Scoiattolo in Gamba, conducted by Maestro João Paulo Santos in a stage production by Erica Mandillo, performed at the Modern Arts Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; as King Ponto in António Teixeira’s Variedades de Proteu, conducted by Maestro Stephen Bull; as Pluton in M. Being passionate about acting, Rui is often called upon to act as Vocal Director in theatre productions and musical theatre shows, and, on occasion, accepts invitations to perform as a Declamatory Theatre actor, as was the case in a stage production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet by Ricardo Pais.
